There has never been a time in which both men and women have not led in one way or another. For centuries, women's leadership roles focused on their influence within the home or occasionally, for a small handful, on a larger political stage as queen or empress. However, since the start of the 20th Century, the avenues for women to lead beyond these contexts have expanded, and since the 1970s, women in leadership roles within the marketplace, educational organizations, government structures, faith-based institutes, and hospital systems has grown.
